António Guterres, Secretary General of the United Nations, calls for global action at The Summit of the Future for ‘Pact of the Future’.
The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a “Pact for the Future”, which UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres described as a landmark agreement that is a “step-change towards more effective, inclusive, networked multilateralism”
In light of the escalating challenges facing our world, I have convened the Summit of the Future to steer us back on course. People everywhere yearn for a future defined by peace, dignity, and prosperity. They are calling for decisive global action to confront the climate crisis, combat inequality, and address emerging risks that threaten us all.
The Summit of the Future aims to establish a framework for international cooperation that meets these urgent expectations. I welcome the adoption of the Pact for the Future, the Global Digital Compact, and the Declaration on Future Generations—significant strides toward more effective, inclusive, and interconnected multilateralism.
Since the beginning of my mandate, I have championed the principles enshrined in these documents, and I remain steadfastly committed to their implementation until my final day in office.
We have opened the door to #OurCommonFuture; now it is our collective responsibility to walk through it. This requires not just consensus, but tangible action.
I urge all United Nations member states to rise to this challenge and take the necessary steps forward.
