During the World Economic Forum in Davos, HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco hosted a high-level breakfast on January 24, focusing on innovative solutions to the global plastic pollution crisis.

Organized by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation in partnership with Una Terra, the event brought together 30 leaders from major international companies to foster dialogue and collaboration in tackling the escalating issue of plastic waste.

In his opening address, Prince Albert II stressed the critical role of economic forces in addressing plastic pollution, highlighting the potential for investment to drive innovation, development, and progress. “This is a vital threat, but we are not powerless against it: that is why we are here—to act, to mobilize the right means, and to rally goodwill,” he said.

The involvement of economic forces is essential to solving the major crisis posed by plastic. I believe this investment, in turn, represents a significant opportunity for innovation, development, and progress. (…) This is a vital threat, but we are not powerless against it: that is why we are here. To act, to mobilize the right means, and to rally goodwill. Because the means and the will exist.

The discussion aimed to tackle pressing questions such as how businesses can adopt circular economy practices, overcome barriers to reducing plastic waste, and identify promising innovative solutions. The meeting sought to inspire collaboration, with participants sharing experiences, strategies, and best practices to drive tangible progress.

The event aligns with the Foundation’s broader mission to advance a sustainable blue economy, addressing major threats to the ocean. In addition to the breakfast, the Foundation participated in other blue economy-related events, including Monaco House, hosted by the Monaco Government’s Attractiveness Department on January 23.

The breakfast marked a meaningful step toward uniting stakeholders and leveraging collective resources and expertise to transform the plastic crisis into an opportunity for innovation, collaboration, and lasting change.
