Over 160 luxury brands join The Fashion Pact, pledging net-zero carbon emissions by 2050

Fashion often gets criticized for its lack of sustainability, and for good reason. It’s a major contributor to global carbon emissions, responsible for about 10% according to the World Bank. To put that in perspective, that’s equivalent to the combined emissions of France, Germany, and the UK, according to a report by McKinsey.

The environmental impact goes beyond just emissions. Fabric dying and treatment contribute to around 20% of global wastewater, according to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation. Furthermore, 85% of textiles end up in landfills or are incinerated when most of these materials could be reused. And with its current growth trajectory, the industry misses the Paris Agreement commitment by 50%.

However, there are efforts underway to address these issues. Over 160 brands, including many luxury labels, have joined The Fashion Pact, committing to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. They aim to have 50% renewable energy in their operations by 2025, reaching 100% by 2030.
