Monaco sets example with first water recycling car wash in sustainability transition

Monaco continues to demonstrate its commitment to environmental protection with a new initiative in water resource management. The Prince’s Government has decided to upgrade car washes in public parking areas to include water recycling systems.

The first of these eco-friendly car washes has been installed at the Heliport car park, where wastewater can now be reused indefinitely through a nearly closed-loop system. Similar systems will be implemented at the Wurtemberg, La Colle, and Salines car parks in the future.

Benefits of Water Recycling in Car Washes:

  1. Reduction of Drinking Water Waste: Traditional car washes consume and discharge thousands of cubic meters of drinking water annually. The new systems will significantly decrease this waste.
  2. Organic Process: The recycled water is stored in above-ground tanks for decantation, followed by fine filtration and disinfection in a biological reactor before being reused.
  3. Year-Round Operation: These car washes can operate throughout the year, even during periods of drought and water conservation alerts, as outlined in the Ministerial Decree n° 2023-255 of May 4, 2023.

This initiative underscores Monaco’s dedication to sustainable practices and responsible resource management.
