In a significant step towards greater consistency in sustainability reporting, the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) have released a joint interoperability mapping resource This innovative tool, born from a collaboration initiated in 2022, aligns TNFD Disclosure Recommendations with GRI Standards, which are in line with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
The new resource is designed to aid organizations, particularly the 14,000 GRI reporters, in seamlessly integrating both standards into their sustainability disclosures. It includes a detailed guidance document and a correspondence table, offering clarity on how business decisions impact biodiversity and how these impacts can be managed across value chains.
Key points
Key highlights include the consistent use of nature-related concepts, definitions from the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), and a high-level comparison of differences between TNFD and GRI reporting approaches.
- Mapping consists of a (i) detailed guidance document and (ii) correspondence table to help 14,000 GRI reporters align with TNFD
- Consistent nature-related concepts and definitions, including the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES)’s five drivers of biodiversity loss
- Reflects GRI 101: Biodiversity 2024 and TNFD Recommendations
- Strong consistency in global disclosure metrics. The tool and guidance note also provide a high-level comparison of differences in TNFD and GRI reporting approaches, which should be considered by report preparers when moving from one reporting framework to the other.
This mapping tool supports thousands of organizations worldwide, enabling seamless integration of TNFD recommendations and preventing the need for double reporting
