Formula 1 teams up with Global Citizen in race to eliminate single-use plastic

Formula 1 is taking a stand against single-use plastics, teaming up with Global Citizen to champion sustainability at the Monaco Grand Prix and beyond. Throughout the event, various stakeholders, including teams, officials, and commercial partners, will commit to minimizing or eliminating single-use plastics like water bottles and cutlery from their operations trackside.

This initiative aligns with a broader goal within the F1 community to slash single-use plastic bottle consumption by 1 million in 2021 and ultimately phase out single-use plastics entirely from Grand Prix events by 2025. It represents a significant step towards a healthier and more sustainable future, driven by collective action and environmental stewardship.

Formula 1’s commitment to eliminating single-use plastics aligns with its broader mission to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030. A pivotal aspect of this endeavor involves ensuring that all waste generated within the sport is either reused, recycled, or composted.

Despite the widespread use of plastic worldwide, single-use plastics pose a significant environmental hazard. With over 300 million tons of plastic produced annually, half of it is utilized just once. Alarmingly, up to one-third of the 78 million tons of plastic packaging produced yearly finds its way into our oceans, exacerbating environmental pollution and endangering marine ecosystems.

The repercussions of single-use plastics are pervasive, manifesting as litter on roads, accumulating in expanding landfills, and infiltrating our oceans. This pollution poses a threat to wildlife and human health alike, obstructing sewers and contaminating water sources.

A 2017 study examining water samples revealed a concerning trend: a significant portion of tap water contains microscopic plastic particles. In the United States, for instance, 94% of all samples tested positive for these fragments, underscoring the ubiquity and severity of plastic pollution in our environment.

Race enthusiasts worldwide can contribute to this initiative by taking simple yet impactful steps to reduce their reliance on single-use plastics. Embracing refillable water bottles, opting for reusable shopping bags, and advocating for stronger environmental regulations with political leaders are effective ways to combat plastic pollution. By making these conscious choices, fans can play a vital role in fostering a healthier, more sustainable future for our planet.
