The 8th issue of the EU Copernicus Ocean State Report (OSR), September 2024, is available online, offering a comprehensive analysis of the state, variability, and changes in the global ocean. Produced by the EU Copernicus Marine Service and coordinated by Mercator Ocean International, this flagship report reflects contributions from over 120 international experts.
The report, which provides critical insights for scientists, blue economy professionals, policymakers, and the general public, underscores the ocean’s response to both human activities and natural variability.
Pierre Bahurel, Director General of Mercator Ocean International, emphasized that the OSR 8 is part of a broader effort to monitor ocean changes through data, forecasts, and in-depth analysis.
Ocean change is the ocean’s reaction to human-activities as well the variations it undergoes naturally; it is a concept we at Mercator Ocean International work to describe through, for example, ocean data and forecasts, visualisation tools, and in-depth analysis. The Ocean State Report is an annual publication and is one of the many tools we develop to tell this story of ocean change, which this year reveals an ocean in flux and in need of protection
Pierre Bahurel, Director General of Mercator Ocean international
This year’s findings reveal a dynamic ocean, experiencing significant fluctuations and highlighting the urgent need for greater protection and sustainable management to mitigate the impacts of climate change and human exploitation.
The report is accompanied by an interactive summary tailored for policymakers to facilitate informed decision-making in ocean conservation efforts.
