Canada implements new federal plastics registry to track and report plastic usage

The Canadian Government has introduced a new Federal Plastics Registry, mandating plastic producers to report the amount and type of plastic they introduce into the Canadian market. This registry will track plastic across its entire lifecycle, from production to disposal, aligning with Canada’s zero plastic waste agenda.

The initiative aims to address the significant plastic waste issue in Canada, where only 9% of the 4.4 million tonnes of plastic waste generated annually is recycled. Reporting requirements will be gradually implemented, starting with packaging, electronic equipment, and single-use plastics in September 2025. Resin manufacturers and importers, along with other plastic categories, will follow suit in 2026. Reporting on plastic waste generated by various sectors and its disposal will commence in subsequent years.

Small producers placing less than one tonne of plastic will be exempt from reporting obligations.

Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Environment and Climate Change said:

Canadians expect the Government of Canada to take action to reduce plastic waste and pollution, and we are delivering on our commitment. The Federal Plastics Registry is a practical tool that will help track plastics across the economy, inform future actions, and measure progress to reduce plastic waste and pollution.
