Sanlorenzo’s 50Steel Almax Achieves SEA Index® Certification, Setting New Standard for Sustainable Yachting featured at Monaco Yacht Show
Sanlorenzo’s latest superyacht, the 50Steel Almax, has been awarded the prestigious SEA Index® certification, a groundbreaking step in the journey toward carbon-neutral yachting. Certified by Lloyd’s Register, the SEA Index®—established in 2020 by the Yacht Club de Monaco (YCM) and Credit Suisse—has become the gold standard for assessing CO2 emissions in the yachting industry.
This certification aims to assist yacht owners in adopting more sustainable practices while promoting eco-friendly technologies across the sector.
The 50Steel Almax is the world’s first superyacht to incorporate a Reformer-Fuel Cell modular system, developed in collaboration with Siemens Energy. The innovative system transforms green methanol into hydrogen, which is then converted into electricity to power the yacht’s hospitality equipment—without the need to store hydrogen onboard.
This technological feat allows the yacht to generate up to 100kW of electricity, covering 85% of its energy needs for hospitality services. The certification was awarded after an extensive study by SEA Index® and Lloyd’s Register, following Sanlorenzo’s commitment to reducing carbon intensity.
Massimo Perotti, Chairman and CEO of Sanlorenzo, described the 50Steel Almax as a significant milestone in their mission toward a sustainable yachting industry: “This revolutionary solution is a crucial part of our 2030 carbon neutrality roadmap, and it reflects our passion for innovation while maintaining the comfort and elegance that define Sanlorenzo.”
The SEA Index® is not only focused on technical assessments but also aims to create a network of sustainable maritime stakeholders. Deployed in over 15 harbors and marinas across the Mediterranean and Seychelles, including Monaco’s YCM Marina, the SEA Index® is gaining traction as a global standard.
The initiative encourages more responsible yachting practices by collaborating with classification societies such as Lloyd’s Register and RINA, ensuring rigorous evaluations of yachts’ environmental impact.
YCM General Secretary Bernard d’Alessandri highlighted the significance of the SEA Index® in driving change: “Our goal is to create an internationally recognized, unbiased assessment system for superyachts, helping owners stay ahead in the energy transition and fostering a yachting community that prioritizes ocean health.”
By embracing the latest in sustainable technology, the SEA Index® certification continues to pave the way for a greener yachting future, offering independent assessments that inform and inspire eco-friendly practices across the maritime industry.
